Coimbatore is one of the most progressive cities in Tamil Nadu. The city also happens to be the 3rd largest in the state. It has also been given the nickname of being the Manchester of the South. The city is seated near the river Noyyal. It is believed that the city of Coimbatore existed much before 2nd century AD. Coimbatore was rules by the Chola, Hoysalas and the Pandayasamonst many others.
When the state came to be rules by the British, the city’s name was thereafter known as Coimbatore. Locals however still call it Kovai till this date.
Coimbatore hosts a very enjoyable climate year round always in engulfed in a cloud or two. The breeze passes all over the 25km stretch of the Palakkad area. The soil is rich and fertile as result of which the city has managed to exceed in agricultural harvests and industry, both at the same time. The city of Coimbatore, has grown cotton for hundreds of years now and has established a well known textile industry which feeds trade markets. The very first mills came in the year 1888 and as of now they are over 200 mills dedicated to textile alone. The economy of this region strongly growing and has gained a reputation of its own in country. The Hydro electricity plant at the Pykara Falls caused the cotton to flourish in the city.
The city has now over 25,000 industries and mills all around. Coimbatore has also been successful in manufacturing pumps for motor pumping systems and other engineering appliances and goods.
The sub regional office of the city was the very first to come to existence in the state of Tamil Nadu in the year 1978. The office then became a regional office in April 2005 . Salem and Trichy were soon made its subordinates. The Coimbatore region has over 21 lakh members who work in cohesion with over 23,000 establishments in the 17 districts. These distrct offices are located in Erode, Cuddalore, Conur, TripurandKarur. Other offices at the lower levels are found at the Nilgris, Thankavur and Kumbakonam.
